5) MMA September Newsletter
September has proved to be a very exciting month for Mixed Martial Arts within 7KS Chikara.
We are outreaching to other MMA clubs to train and grow by networking together in a framework of clubs and instructors to better themselves in the ever evolving world of MMA.
For anybody reading this with doubts about the future for MMA rest assured that is looks very rosy and is most definitely here to stay. There are over 25,000 professional MMA fighters competing in over 2,500 promotions and leagues worldwide which is more than in Boxing.
Earlier this month one of our students Levi Mansfield recommended the services of a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor that he had trained with to our Master Instructor and Director of 7KS Chikara Jez Hall.
After a meeting and a small seminar at the request of the Master Instructor we are pleased to have secured a weekly class of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu taught by a native of Brazil called Marcus Silva.
Marcus or ‘Jaba ‘to his friends has competed in various Jiu Jitsu tournaments in his home country and in the UK.
He possesses some of the best ground fighting and submission skills that I have ever seen. With his expertise, the passage of time and some hard training we will see a transformation in the ground game required and crucial for effective MMA competition.
It was indeed a pleasure and at the same time a shock to the system for yours truly to become a student again but fortunately for me I am living proof that an old dog can learn new tricks and as Jez Hall points out you go to China to learn authentic Kung Fu so why not let a Brazilian teach us authentic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
In the coming months we expect to hold seminars with Marcus and some other big names in the MMA world and our MMA fighters will also be active around the country and at our own shows as well.
Until next month this has been your friendly MMA Instructor leaving you with a thought for the month.
A gem does not sparkle without polishing nor is a man perfected without trials.
Yours in Martial Arts
Mark Norwood

6) WUMA Lincolnshire Open
A host of fighters from the Chikara fight team travelled to the Yarborough leisure centre in Lincoln on Sunday 7th September to take part in the World United Martial Arts Association (WUMA) Lincolnshire open. Among the clubs who attended were fighters from Worcester, Coventry and Kidderminster.
All of team Chikara fought extremely well and for some it was the 1st time they had been in competition. Among the 12 strong fight team that made the journey were James Kenny, Ben Noble, Craig Good and Sam Kenny who all fought in the mens light continuous -80kg category. All four fighters performed very well showing a lot of stamina and determination throughout the tournament. Ben taking 2nd and James Kenny 3rd
Barney Wain and Christian Sharp also showed their skills in the boys semi contact and light continuous sections. Both boys pushed their opponents to the limit and gave just as much as they received. A lot of fast techniques and combinations were used throughout the knockout stages by both fighters proving they have what it takes to become a star on the fight circuit. Both coming 2nd in their respective categories
Daniel Windle and Scott Carlile performed very well in their semi contact categories with lightning fast techniques which earned them both a 3rd place. Daniel also took part in the grapple and strike competition where he was just beaten by his much heavier opponent and Scott earned a second place in his light continuous section also.
First time fighters Luke Booty and Vicky Caffrey showed massive determination in their light continuous categories and proved that if you put in the hard work in the gym, you can achieve anything. Luke had a tough route to the final where he showed great determination against his opponent who just took the judges decision leaving Luke with a well earned 2nd place. Vicky went into her fight with 110% and showed a lot of guts against her opponent. The judges decision at the end of the fight was awarded to Vicky giving her the 1st place she deserved.
Sam Dixon made his first appearrance in the light continuous competition and gave a good account of himself against a very experienced opponent.
Last up to fight on the day was Ben Fahey who took part in the grapple and strike tournament where he showed maturity against his larger opponent. Fahey looked like he was on the losing end of the fight until he turned it around and pulled off a victory.
Some of the fighters are now in training for their next fight at Coalville on Sat 27th
A big thankyou to Peter Cook for holding the tournament.

7) Nottingham Show
Two fighters from the Scunthorpe branch of 7KS Chikara made their way to west park leisure centre in Nottingham on Saturday 16th August for a tournament within a steel cage ring. Michael Dixon (22) and Ben Fahey(15) were matched up by the promoters at Gladiators gym and accepted the unusual fight with no hesitation.
Young Ben Fahey who has only been training with Chikara since April fought at 58kg with low kick rules against a worthy opponent named Joe Parker. The fight was scheduled for 3 x 1.5 minute rounds and both competitors were ready for the first bell. Parker used his boxing skills well to push Fahey back against the cold steel and gain the advantage in the first round. After some wise advice from his corner, Fahey came out in the second round with an array of low kicks to his opponents calf and thigh which Parker felt. The final round saw both fighters really battling it out for the judges decision, Parker tried to box his way to victory with rapid combinations but Fahey saw this and was very mature in his defence with even more low kicks and parry’s which in the end gave the young up and coming fighter the victory.
Next up was Michael who was matched against a taller opponent at the same weight of 100kg, Steve Williams. Three 2 minute rounds saw both fighters slugging it out for the upper hand. Dixon used his speed to get on the inside of his taller opponent and punished the stomach area. Williams showed his stamina in the second round by using his height and leg kicks to keep Dixon at bay. This didn’t phase the young Chikara fighter and kept battling through with fast and powerful combinations. The judges could hardly separate the two on points and with no shame to Dixon, he just missed out on the victory to the local fighter.
Both students are now back in training for their next fight on 28th September at Coalville. Good luck boys.

A big thank you to Dean Sugden from Newark Martial Arts for inviting us and for an extremely well run show.

9) WAKO’s Judgement Day Tournament
On the 25th May two 7KS Chikara fighters Scott Carlile and Barney Wain travelled to Sheffield to compete in WAKO’s Judgement Day Tournament at Ponds Forge.
Scott Carlile entered the -57kg light continuous category and came 1st. Good combinations with hands and legs gave him the advantage along with excellent movement to avoid oncoming shots. Scott won his first round comfortably and picked up the pace in the second and third with accurate punches to his opponent. Judges awarded scott with a gold which he was happy about seeing as though it was his first tournament.
Barney Wain entered the -52kg light continuous category where he came up against a technical fighter in the first round. Despite being Barney’s first light continuous tournament he battled very well and landed some good combinations which put his opponent on the back foot. As the fight went on his opponent used his long legs to keep Barney at distance and scored with the judges to win the round.
